The body of the dragon boat rower, who went missing after an accident at Manila Bay, was found floating near the Manila Yacht Club a day after the incident.
In an article written by Charina Clarisse Echaluce of Manila Bulletin, it was disclosed that Philippine Coast Guard Commander Armand Balilo identified the fatality as Jerome Tipon, 30, a dragon boat rower.
On Saturday, April 30, the members of the Alab Sagwan Pilipinas rowing team, which includes Tipon, were practicing in Manila Bay before dawn when water began entering their boat. When the boat capsized, the rescuers rushed to the scene and were able to pick up 21 of the local rowers.
Balilo described what happened as a “freak accident” as there were a number of incidents in the past when a boat capsized but no one has died until this time.
“Parang freak accident talaga ito. Marami kaming na-encounter before diyan na merong tumataob na mga dragon boat pero wala naman naiuulat na may nasasawi. Pinapacheck namin ito at pumasok na rin naman ang mga pulis [It’s more of a freak accident. We’ve encountered a number of incidents when a dragon boat capsized but nobody died. We’re checking it and the police is already helping us],” he said.
Tipon’s body was found floating near the Manila Yacht Club, past 1 a.m. Balilo said they tried to save him but their efforts was not enough.
“Hindi namin tinigilan ‘yung search and recovery pero hindi tayo naging mapalad pero at least nakuha natin ito at nagkaroon na ng closure itong insidente na ‘to [We did not stop the search and recovery but we failed to save him. But at least we have recovered his body and the case has a closure already],” he noted.
