MANILA, Philippines – Senator Antonio Trillanes IV refuses to slow down in his attacks against Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte whom he accused this time of facilitating the release of alleged eight Chinese drug lords back in 2005.
In an interview over DZMM on Sunday, May 1, Trillanes said Duterte intervened in the release of 8 Chinese nationals from mainland China who were then tagged as engaging in illegal drug trades.
The suspects were allegedly caught in an entrapment operation that yielded P200-M worth of illegal drugs sometime last January 2005. Duterte, who was in his 15th year as Davao City mayor that time, has supposedly freed the Chinese nationals “in the spirit of Chinese New Year.”
“Alam niyo po ang ginawa nitong Mayor Duterte na pinapangalandakan niyang ipinapapatay niya iyung drug lords, inarbor po niya iyung walong Intsik, Chinese nationals,” Trillanes told DZMM. [You know, Mayor Duterte who has been trumpeting his execution of drug lords, has intervened in behalf of the eight Chinese nationals.]
“Ang dahilan niya po ay in the spirit of Chinese New Year,” the vice presidential added. [His reason was it was in the spirit of Chinese New Year.]
Trillanes noted that the incident was even headlined in a major broadsheet.
“Dito niyo makikita na hindi niya ipinapatay iyung drug lord, inaarbor. Pero ngayon, may mga pinapatay ding pusher. Tanong dito e baka naman iyung kompetensya ang ipinapapatay,” he said. [You will see here that he is not actually killing these drug lords, but instead intervening in their behalf. But now, some pushers were also killed. The question here is, maybe the competitors are the ones being killed.]
However, Trillanes said he has yet to probe his last allegation.
The senator maintained his claim is not part of a black propaganda to undermine Duterte’s chances in the coming election, but rather to serve as a warning for voters – especially those who are inclined to support the mayor – to reconsider their choices while there’s still time.
Trillanes was the first to expose that Duterte has been maintaining a bank account with P211-M in funds which the tough-talking mayor allegedly failed to declare in his 2014 statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN).
Duterte vowed to open his bank records on Monday, May 2, to refute Trillanes’ allegations.
