- The ‘xerox girl of FC’ recovers readings that survived the fire that hit UP Diliman
- The fire burned down the Faculty Center which housed rare collections of books and materials
- There is a call to help the photocopier operator affected by the fire
As the University of the Philippines (UP) community in Diliman, Quezon City continues to cope with the aftermath of the fire that gutted its iconic Faculty Center (FC), a hint of good news came from one of its photocopier machine operators.
Apparently, copies of some reading materials managed to survive the blaze that caused structural damages estimated at P3 million; not including the rare collection of books and other research materials in the building which housed the faculty offices of the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) and some departments of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP).
On his Facebook post, Professor Clod Yambao of the Department of Arts Studies called the attention of the public to also help out the college’s resident photocopier operator, Ate Jofel, who managed to recover copies of the professor’s readings in his subjects:
“galak na galak si ate jofel, ang bayaning xerox girl ng FC. nagtatalon sa tuwa at niyakap ako ng wagas na sinambit sa akin, ‘Sir, yung readings nio ligtas na ligtas nasa akin yung 1 and 2 at 190! nakuha ko pagkatapos ng sunog hindi natupok ng apoy!’
[Ate Jofel, the hero xerox girl of FC, was very happy. She was jumping with joy and she hugged me as she said, ‘Sir, your readings are safe with me, the ones for 1 and 2 and 190! I was able to get them after the fire and they weren’t burned!]”
Aside from the professor’s readings in Art Studies 1, 2, and 190, it was also reported that materials from English 1, 2, and 10 classes, as well as in Philippine Institutions, Filipino 40, Panitikang Pilipino 17, Philosophy, Linguistics, and History, were all saved from the fire.
According to Ate Jofel, the entire storage room was burned down but the cabinet where she kept the files miraculously survived.
Unfortunately, her photocopier machine went down with the flames.
Professor Yambao called for support for Ate Jofel, who is endeared by professors and students alike for her dedication to her job, even skipping her lunch break when the demand for her photocopying services are high:
“kailangan ni ate jofel ng pwesto at xerox machine para makapag- operate sia ulit. kailangan din nia ng financial support. yung pagxe-xerox ang kanyang pinagkakabuhayan at pangsuporta sa pamilya. let me know kung sino gusto tumulong.
[Ate Jofel needs a new spot and xerox machine to operate again. She also needs financial support. Photocopying is her livelihood for supporting her family. Let me know who wants to help.]
Individuals who want to extend support can contact Professor Yambao through Facebook.
