- Cebu solon temporarily leaves VP Binay’s party, endorses Duterte for president
- She said she can no longer ignore her provincemates’ clamor for a Bisaya president
- She also said UNA officials understand her decision, harbor no ill-feelings towards her
MANILA, Philippines – And another Garcia has turned to Digong.
Almost two weeks after One Cebu party led by her brother Winston Garcia severed its ties with the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) and endorsed Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, Cebu 3rd District Rep. Gwendolyn Garcia announced her leave of absence from the latter’s party as she will also be supporting the mayor over Vice President Jejomar Binay.
“I can’t be with UNA if I am supporting Digong. That is why I am taking a leave of absence purely for that reason and no other. It was quite a difficult decision to make,” the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted her as saying.
Garcia, who is also a former governor of Cebu, said she came to the decision after coming to terms with her provincemates’ overwhelming preference for Duterte as they clamor for a Bisaya president.
“Cebuanos are looking at me. I was governor of Cebu for nine years. I can’t just stay silent. My voice is a voice many seek to hear,” she said.
At the same time, Garcia— who also revealed she spoke with UNA president Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco about her decision over the weekend— nevertheless said she will continue to maintain warm ties with both Binay and UNA.
“Before this, my relationship with the vice president was very warm. I don’t think my decision will change. He has been a true friend in need and has been with me through thick and thin,” she said.
The founder of One Cebu, Garcia is also a founding member of UNA.
