- TV still highly preferred by Filipinos
- This was based on a recent study by Nielsen via Global Video-on Demand Survey
- About 59% of online consumers are subscribed to a cable provider
Despite the rise of online platforms where consumers have the luxury to select, Filipinos still prefer watching TV; a recent survey by Nielsen said.
Nielsen, in its Global Video-on-Demand Survey showed that 59 percent of online Filipino consumers are subscribed to a cable provider while only 16 percent are subscribed to an online service provider, an article published by ABS-CBN on April 2 mentioned.
As revealed by the survey, from among those who are subscribed to an online service provider about 81 percent of them disclosed they watch some form of watch “video-on-demand” (VOD) programming through TV, computer, tablet or a mobile phone.
Stuart Jamieson, Nielsen Philippines managing director, said that the emergence of video-on-demand programming options is giving consumers greater control over what, when and how they watch content.
“Viewers are now expanding their range of viewing platforms as well as the amount of media they’re consuming. We are seeing that online is supplementing traditional services,” Jamieson was quoted saying.
In addition to this, the survey showed that 45 percent of online Filipino consumers watch VOD once a day or more often.
Some 89 percent of Filipino respondents, on the other hand, said that when VOD is accessed they view movies, while 60 percent of them revealed they watch TV programs.
Online Filipino consumers totaling to 85 percent stressed they can view VOD at a time that is most convenient for them. About 82 percent said they like to catch up on multiple episodes at one time.
According to Jamieson, the VOD is seen to be complementing TV by filling the gaps that come with traditional TV viewing specifically during times when Filipinos can’t get to their TV at a certain time. “They now know that they have the ability to watch it at a later date that allows them to catch up,” he added.
Meanwhile, some 74 percent of Filipino consumers cited they like to use social media while watching VOD programming.
Over 30,000 online respondents in 61 countries have been polled by the Nielsen Global Video-on-Demand Survey to gauge worldwide sentiment about VOD viewing and advertising methods.
