- Malacañang says Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is immature and unfit to be the next president of the country
- This developed after Duterte publicly cracked his rape joke saying ‘he should be the first’
- The victim was an Australian lay missionary named Jacqueline Hammill who was raped and had her throat slashed by a gang of inmates at the Davao City Police Office in 1989
Following his rape joke, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has been tagged by Malacañang, through presidential Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr., as ‘immature and unfit to be the next Philippine president.’
“His statement, recorded on videotape, reveals that since he first served as Davao City Mayor, he has not matured or evolved and that his offer to serve as President truly deserves serious scrutiny,” the statement goes as mentioned by an article written by Nestor Corrales on Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Coloma hit how Duterte supposedly made fun of a serious crime like rape; further stating that the presidential candidate makes fun of and trivializes the rape and killing of a female missionary from a foreign land who was part of a team made up mostly of women and who were doing their part in reforming convicted prison inmates.
Duterte’s statement, Coloma noted, “speaks volumes” regarding his character. It likewise shows lack of respect for women, he added.
As such, Coloma stressed that Duterte “does not respect nor care for the sensitivities of the countries with whom the Philippines maintains cordial and cooperative relations.”
A video of Duterte has gone viral after he made a joke about an Australian rape victim whom he described as “beautiful.” In the video, the mayor said he “should have been first.”
The Australian lay missionary named Jacqueline Hammill was raped and her throat slashed by a gang of inmates at the Davao City Police Office in 1989.
Meanwhile, Robin Haines Merill, the sister of the Australian rape victim had read of the news concerning Duterte’s derogatory remarks to Jacqueline Hamill.
Merill posted a statement on her Facebook wall which goes: “ON BEHALF OF MY SISTER IN CHRIST, MISSIONARY JACQUELINE HAMILL, I PUBLICLY DENOUNCE THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDACY OF DUTERTE IN THE PHILIPPINES.”
