• An estimated 15,000 people attended Mayor Duterte’s campaign rally in Alabang, Muntinlupa City
• The mayor and his running mate Senator Alan Peter Cayetano arrived six hours late but the crowd did not leave
• The tandem was greeted with loud cheers when they finally arrived
Thousands of people showed up at the huge vacant lot across Vivere Hotel in Filinvest City in Alabang, Muntinlupa City on Friday, April 8, in a display of support for Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and his running mate Senator Alan Peter Cayetano.
Mayor Duterte was scheduled to be at the rally site at 4 p.m., but he was late. It was not until 10 p.m. when he arrived. The crowd did not leave, however.
The crowds who waited for him from three to four hours became ecstatic when they saw the mayor coming. They greeted him with air punches and chanted his name.
“Duterte! Duterte!” the huge crowd, many of them brought their own handmade campaign materials, chanted.
Niña P. Calleja wrote in her article for Inquirer published on April 10, 2016 that Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, who came ahead of the mayor, explained to the crowd why they were behind schedule.
Cayetano said the people on the roads who waited for their motorcade to pass stretched to what was supposed to be a less-than-an hour travel time from Parañaque to Alabang into six hours.
“The last time I saw that crowd was during Edsa 2,” Cayetano said; referring to the huge rally that led to the ouster of President Joseph Estrada in 2001.
He then asked the people why they waited for them. “Are you all excited to see change happen?”
The crowd answered with a loud “Yes.”
The crowd, estimated at more than 15,000, erupted into cheers when Mayor Duterte finally emerged at the stage.
