• LP presidential bet Mar Roxas travels to Hong Kong to court OFW voters
• Roxas promises to build a First World society like Hong Kong
• His Hong Kong visit came 6 days ahead of the overseas absentee voting that will start on April 9
Liberal Party (LP) standard bearer Manuel “Mar” Roxas II and his running mate Rep. Leni Robredo traveled to Hong Kong where there are around 90,000 OFW (overseas Filipino workers) voters.
The LP bets visited the hangouts of OFWs in the Central District of this Chinese Special Administrative Region; six days ahead of the month-long overseas absentee voting that will start on April 9.
Philip Tubeza, a contributor, wrote in an article published by Inquirer on April 4, 2016 that Roxas likened the Aquino administration’s “daang matuwid” (straight path) governance to a “step-by-step” building of a First World society like Hong Kong in the Philippines.
“I’m not saying that ‘daang matuwid’ has now reached paradise, what I’m saying is we have come a long way. It’s like we’re building Hong Kong. It will not happen overnight but it cannot be denied that we’ve already done many things and our economy will grow faster in the coming years,” Roxas told Filipino professionals and domestic helpers in a gathering at a restaurant.
Roxas said the Philippines has not yet reached the Hong Kong status, but that the “economy is growing…step by step.”
“If we stop, we will go back to what we had before,” he warned his listeners; adding “if I am elected, there will be continuity of the progress that has been made.”
For her part, Leni Robredo vowed a full review of government policies that cause burden to OFWs such as excessive fees collected by training agencies and the collection of terminal fees at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
