- Shape of Lioness Head Rock formation in Norzagaray, Bulacan is ruined
- Garay Post, a Facebook page about the municipality laments that the quarrying of the SPAR Development Corporation in the area is the cause
- A campaign to #SaveLionessRock and #SaveRhinoRock has been launched by Gideon Lasco of Pinoy Mountaineer since last year
Lioness Head Rock, a limestone formation which takes the shape of a lioness in Norzagaray, Bulacan is no more.
Garay Post, a Facebook page about the municipality, uploaded a photo of the ruined formation on March 31. According to the page, the photograph was taken by JB Brodeth and I. Castro Jr. on March 30. The Lioness Head Rock is two of the animal-shaped formations in the area; the other one being rhinoceros-shaped aptly called Rhino Rock.
Garay post laments the SPAR Development Corporation did not honor the previous agreement to stop quarrying in the area last year until the Local Government Unit has not finalized its plans.
Since March last year, Pinoy Mountaineer Gideon Lasco posted an open letter to SPAR to save the Lioness and Rock formation from quarrying.
In his post, Lasco said the rock formations have the unique qualities of being shaped like animals and offer a breathtaking view of the town. He expressed his concern when Councilor Junjun Saplala informed him of the company’s plans to close the area near the formation and to disallow the locals from bringing visitors there.
Lasco appealed to the company to keep the formation open to visitors and to not destroy the rock formations through their activities.
“Whatever profit you will earn from these rocks cannot match the priceless gift of beauty, and the pride that this rock formation has brought to the people of Norzagaray and the nature lovers of our country. Be mindful of the parable in the Book of Samuel, of the rich man who have hundreds of sheep and yet still coveted the one single lamb of his poor neighbor,” Lasco wrote.
Lasco reiterated that the Lioness and Rhino should be spared as they are “beautiful figures carved in stone.”
The campaign to #SaveLionessRock and #SaveRhinoRock has been launched by Lasco since last year.
