- Government employees demanded an increase in their minimum monthly wage
- The demand is meant “to bridge the gap” between salaries of workers and the current standard of living
- Court and airport employees recently staged protests to air their concerns to the national government
Government employees are demanding for the increase of the monthly minimum wage rate of P11,068 to P16,000 “to bridge the ever widening gap” between the salaries of workers and the current cost of living.
In an article published by InterAksyon, it was disclosed that the Confederation for Unity, Recognition, and Advancement of Government Employees (Courage) staged a “Black Monday” protest on April 18 in local and national courts; wherein court employees wore black armbands, ribbons, and shirts to express their sentiments.
“The Aquino administration can expect more intensified protests from government employees nationwide until its term ends. This develops as more and more employees are feeling the brunt of low wages, disallowed and discontinued benefits, and worsening contractualization in the public sector,” Courage president Ferdinand Gaite said.
Last Friday, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) workers’ union also staged a similar Black “Mayday” protest, which led to some sort of a confusion at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA).
A black streamer depicting the word “Mayday“, which is an internationally recognized distress call, was draped in the control tower of the airport; prompting the Philippine Air Force and the Philippine National Police’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team to rush to the area.
However, it turned out that no one actually needed immediate assistance in the area, but the CAAP employees would only like to send a message to the national government for the increase of their monthly wage.
