• Senator Trillanes claimed that presidential candidate Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has at least P211 million of unexplained wealth
• Trillanes declined to identify sources but said integrity of information is verifiable
• The mentioned cash asset is allegedly contained in an account at the Bank of the Philippines (BPI) Julia Vargas branch in Pasig City
“That is just the tip of the iceberg. You have no idea how wealthy Duterte is,” Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said as he claimed that Presidential candidate and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has P211M in an undeclared bank account in his 2014 Statement of Assets and Liabilities (SALN) as mandated by law.
“I received the information through my various networks. Mayor Duterte who brags that he is not corrupt and is a simple and poor man should be asked to explain about his secret bank accounts that contained at least P200 million,” said Senator Trillanes.
The SALN aims to maintain transparency of public officials keeping the public informed of any sudden increases in a government employee or official’s wealth. Failure to declare any asset, liability, and net worth is grounds for dismissal in government service.
Written in Philstar, Trillanes, in a phone interview on ANC’s Headstart, challenged Duterte to sue him should his allegations be proven incorrect and he will also resign from his post in the Senate. Trillanes stands by his track record and said this exposé is not politically-driven to boost his vice presidential race ranking.
In 2015, Trillanes, along with Senators Alan Peter Cayetano and Aquilino Pimentel III, exposed alleged corruption against Vice President Jejomar Binay.
According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, with a reported net worth of P21,971,732.62 — Duterte declared in his 2014 SALN assets amounting to P22, 971,732.62 and a liability of P1 million, a personal loan received from a Samuel Uy.
Duterte receives P78,946 monthly pay as mayor of Davao City as prescribed by the Civil Service Commission. On top of his monthly salary, Duterte also received allowances from various agencies he led, such as Watershed Management Council, Regional Peace and Order Council, City Peace and Order Council, Investment Incentive Board and Public Private Partnership Board.
Trillanes, who is supporting the presidential bid of Senator Grace Poe — Duterte’s closest rival in the polls, said Duterte’s bank account has been validated by his camp and that it was under the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) branch in Julia Vargas Avenue in Ortigas Center, Pasig City, Sunstar wrote.
Trillanes said earlier this week “I am now so motivated to make sure that he doesn’t become the president of our country. We cannot have a psycho as our commander-in-chief. Within the next few days, he would be exposed as a fraud.”
