- Bob Arum says Pacquiao-Bradley III didn’t do well in HBO pay-per-view purchases
- He estimates the fight generated between 400,000 and 500,000 HBO PPV buys
- “Yes, it loses money. It was not one of our big successes.” – Arum
Almost two weeks after the third face-off of Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley, Top Rank founder and CEO Bob Arum admitted that the fight didn’t do well when it comes to HBO pay-per-view purchases.
According to an article written by Dan Rafael for ESPN, the veteran boxing promoter said: “It will be somewhere between those numbers, 400,000 and 500,000. It’s all being added up, but it will be closer to 400,000 than 500,000. Terrible.”
He disclosed that overall, the fight lost money, noting that the main event alone cost $ 24 million ($ 20 million to Pacquiao and $ 4 million to Bradley)
“Yes, it loses money. It was not one of our big successes. It happens. We’re big boys. Do I feel good about it? No,” he said.
Arum felt that the poor numbers are caused by Pacquiao’s controversial statement when he said in an interview that same-sex couples are worse than animals and because there are still many boxing fans who are still disappointed with Floyd Mayweather and Pacquiao’s clash in the so-called “Fight of the Century”, which cost $ 100 for pay-per-view.
Despite the disappointing numbers, both Pacquiao and Bradley moved on and disclosed their upcoming plans.
When Pacquiao was asked by the members of the press about his official status as a boxer, the Filipino boxing icon said: “As of now I am retired. I am going to go home and think about it, but I want to be with my family. I want to serve the people of the Philippines.
He’s currently serving as a congressman and running for senator in the Philippines in the coming May 9 election.
As for Bradley, he said he’ll take some time off, regroup and see what’s next for him.
“I’m gonna enjoy my family, been away from them for two months. I’m gonna go enjoy my beach house in San Diego and relax, take my feet up and think about what’s next,” he said.
