MANILA, Philippines – Investigative journalist Ellen Tordesillas have devised a way to find out if the accounts of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte with the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) really existed as claimed by Senator Antonio Trillanes IV.
According to Tordesillas’ post on her Facebook account, a friend of hers went to BPI on Thursday, April 28, before 1:30 pm and deposited P500 into the account number – 002433-0695-39 – which was earlier published by the Inquirer.
True enough, the deposit was accepted and the transaction was validated and came back with a receipt. The account was named under “Rodrigo Roa Duterte” or “Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Sara Z Duterte”.
Earlier, Mayor Duterte denied the existence of the bank accounts wherein the mayor is allegedly holding P211-M that was not supposedly declared in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth, according to Trillanes.
However, on Wednesday, Duterte admitted he has several bank accounts with the BPI, including one with the Julia Vargas branch in Ortigas, Mandaluyong City.
But the presidential aspirant said he only has P17,000 in one of the accounts and has another P50,000 in the other account.
At the same time, he also challenged Trillanes to execute an affidavit on where, how, and for what purpose did the latter obtain the bank records saying the tough-talking mayor has P211-M in his account.
Duterte also urged Trillanes to file a case against him to make everything legal; reiterating that the latter’s allegations that he failed to declare the millions in his bank accounts in his 2014 SALN was merely a fabrication of the senator.
Trillanes had earlier revealed to Inquirer the existence of the bank accounts in question including the amounts deposited in various transactions.
The senator admitted he obtained the information from different sources which he is not inclined to name at the moment.
“I received the information through my various networks. Mayor Duterte who brags that he is not corrupt and is a simple and poor man should be asked to explain about his secret bank accounts that contained at least P200 million,” Inquirer quoted him as saying.
