- The Department of Energy assures the public that there will be stable power supply before, during and after elections
- It further said there will be no power outage as well as forced outages that might cut off the power transmission
- NGCP claimed the reserve outlook in the entire country is enough on the election day
Energy Secretary Zenaida Monsada made an assurance before the House of Representative energy committee that there will be sufficient energy in the country on May 9.
In stating this, Monsada said there will be no power shortage during the election week and no forced outages that might cut off the power transmission as well, an article written by Marc Jayson Cayabyab on the Philippine Daily Inquirer said.
During the consultative meeting which was spearheaded by committee chairman Oriental Mindoro Rep. Reynaldo Umali, Deputy Assistant Chief Santiago Dimaliwat from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) presented to the committee the power outlook for Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao on the election period.
On water reserve, Dimaliwat said Mindanao will suffer thin supply in April because power plants are saving up its water resources to be utilized come Election Day.
Relying so much on hydropower, the NGCP official stressed that Mindanao remains plagued with power outages that persist during the dry season.
Meanwhile, NGCP spokesperson Cynthia Alabanza claimed the reserve outlook in the entire country is enough on the election day with at least 2,200 megawatts (MW) reserve for Luzon, 190 MW reserve in Visayas and 373 MW reserve in Mindanao.
As such, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) revealed before the committee that the vote counting machines are equipped with batteries that could stand up to 14 hours.
Manila Electric Co. (MERALCO) Vice President Ferdinand Geluz, on the other hand, disclosed that the country’s largest power distributor utility is 96 percent finished with the maintenance activities on the transmission lines as he further added that it will be 100 percent completed by April 30.
