BEIJING, China – Photos of a Chinese man, who was allegedly given the wrong flavor of steamed buns by a street hawker, had drawn anger from the online community after giving the most unreasonable reaction to a vendor.
Alicia Tan mentioned in her article for Mashable published on April 25 that the incident was caught on camera by a bystander who later told Chinese media that the unidentified man and his friend were demanding compensation from the vendor after being given the wrong bun flavor.
Out of rage, the two men started trashing the stall and then even kicked the basket of buns onto the ground. One of the duo was seen stomping on all the buns while throwing verbal abuse at the woman. The other man stood by and watched.
Online users demanded justice for the woman who is seen squatting next to her steamed buns; trying to save what could be saved from the spilled buns and clean up the mess done by the duo.
An article by Rory Tingle for Mail Online published on April 25 said the photo was shared widely in China; with the many of the Chinese online users calling upon authorities to arrest the duo and punish them.
Beijing Youth Daily mentioned in their article that the stall owner, who’s only identified by her surname Wang, clarified that the incident occurred not because she served wrong buns to the men.
Wang said the incident was instead due to a drunken altercation between a man and his friends.
“When I watched the news this morning, my first reaction was to cry,” she said.
“I feel particularly aggrieved that it happened not because of buns with the wrong stuffing. I’ve been in this business for many years, I’ve never come across such a reason to smash things,” she added.
The Beijing Chaoyang police has since verified the cause of the incident and still didn’t release a statement whether they will press charges on the men. However, a settlement between the offenders and the stall owner was, reports said, being negotiated.
