The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has announced that the government is promising to lower greenhouse emissions in the country by 70 percent by the year 2030; in connection with the global move to reduce the effects of global warming.
In an article written by Kiersnerr Gerwin Tacadena for GMA News Online on April 29, 2016, it was disclosed that the DENR is developing a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory Management and Reporting System that will help address the country’s problem on pollution and environmental degradation.
“Despite financial limitations, the Philippines has already demonstrated its commitment to meeting its pledge with the implementation of the national climate action plan and the integration of climate change in national and local development plans and budgets,” DENR Sec. Ramon Paje said.
Last week, the Philippine government also joined 174 other countries in signing an international climate accord that aims to boost collective actions against climate change.
“Too much is at stake. Developed countries, therefore, need to do more in terms of dramatically raising their NDC ambition compatible with the 1.5-degrees Celsius threshold, as well as raising funding contribution to the climate action plans of vulnerable countries, which require adequate, predictable and sustainable financing. The Philippines also urges developed and developing countries alike to take urgent pre-2020 action,” Paje added.
Meanwhile, Sen. Loren Legarda, who started her advocacies regarding environmental concerns when she began working as a broadcast journalist in the 1980s, urges different nations to immediately work for the ratification of the agreement in their respective governments.
“The Philippines joins you here today to take that next step and affirm our commitment to undertake and complete domestic processes to bring the Agreement into effect within this year,” she said; adding that she commits to lobby the matter at the Philippine Senate.
