- Manny Pacquiao defeats Timothy Bradley in their third face-off
- Bradley’s trainer, Teddy Atlas, takes responsibility for Bradley’s loss
- He says he came up short and not his ward
Trainer Teddy Atlas was emotional during the post-fight press conference at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas after his ward, Timothy Bradley, lost to Manny Pacquiao on Saturday night, April 9 (Sunday, April 10 in the Philippines).
Atlas took responsibility for Bradley’s loss and admitted that he came up short.
Fight News quoted him as saying: “I came up short. I didn’t serve my fighter enough. I don’t think he came up short, I think I did.”
The two-time Trainer of the Year disclosed he told Bradley to take advantage of the way he’s moving before he exploded.
“Maybe I didn’t push the right buttons,” he added.
In a previous interview, Atlas said he is preparing his fighter as though he will be facing the “Pambansang Kamao” in his prime and not as a fighter who is about to retire.
When he was asked during an interview with Boxing Scene: “In what ways has age and injury changed Pacquiao?”
Atlas answered: “I didn’t see any influence from injury in the Mayweather fight. When he had to throw that hand, he did without wincing or discomfort. As for age, I haven’t seen any dissipation, and I don’t expect any now.”
He said that in order to defeat a dynamic fighter like Pacquiao who utilizes both speed and power, speed will be an important part of the equation for Bradley.
“But calculated and controlled speed,” he emphasized.
As for Bradley, he told his trainer: “Coach, you didn’t come up short, c’mon.”
The former WBO welterweight champion said he’ll take some time off, regroup and see what’s next for him.
“I’m gonna enjoy my family, been away from them for two months. I’m gonna go enjoy my beach house in San Diego and relax, take my feet up and think about what’s next,” he said.
