- New advert in Taiwan features a father-son moment and is making waves online
- The McCafe commercial shows a young man’s attempt to reveal his sexuality to his Dad
- The story of “Acceptance” gains over 3.4 million views in just a few days
Regardless of what country you’re in, homosexuality is not always easy to disclose to one’s family; much more to one’s father.
Now there’s this 90-second advertisement entitled “Acceptance” from a coffee chain wherein during a coffee date the son wrote “I like boys” on his coffee cup and uses it to reveal his sexuality it to his father.
It seemed obvious that the father was a bit shaken and possibly upset over the confession. The father gets up but not to walk out of the McCafe. Rather, after a while, the father comes back holding his cup of coffee, but anger and despair are not written on his face. Perhaps he just needed a little time for the confession to sink in.
The father then takes the pen and his son’s coffee cup, and surprisingly, he inserts the words “accept that you” between the son’s words “I” and “like” which left them both speechless. The son was visibly relieved and touched by the acceptance he got from his Dad.
Since it was posted on Facebook a few days back, the video has been viewed over 3.4 million times and shared by more than 10,300 online users. More than 87,000 have reacted on Facebook and most of the comments on the social issue presented in the clip were positive — acceptance.
However, it also brought out some firestorms after some of Taiwan’s religious fundamentalists describe the latest advert as “polluting” and are calling on parents and consumers to boycott the chain.
In an article written and published by Shanghaiist, the secretary general of the Alliance of Taiwan Religious Groups for the Protection of Family, Chang Shou-yi, through a press statement, wrote that the Alliance “does not approve of the ideological stand behind the advertisement” and accused McDonald’s of “openly promoting gay issues.”
Moreover, the statement also said that: “Because McDonald’s is frequented by many children, it is especially important to oppose the promotion of same-sex behavior.” The Alliance made it known that 1) they oppose all advertising which miseducate children on sexual behavior,” and 2) that they rebuke and boycott all enterprises that are polluting the next generation.
The Taiwan’s President-elect President-elect Tsai Ing-wen, on the other hand, has been on the record as saying she supports marriage equality; whereby she reportedly even said in January that “In the face of love, everyone is equal. Let everyone have the freedom to love and to pursue their happiness.”
