- The Supreme Court dismissed the petitions seeking a TRO against the K to 12 Program
- The petitioners against the controversial program expressed dismay over the SC’s decision
- The full implementation of the K to 12 Program will start this coming June
The Supreme Court (SC) dismissed the petitions from several groups seeking a temporary restraining order (TRO) against Republic Act 10533 or the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 or simply known as the K to 12 Program.
Atty. Theodore Te, the chief of the Supreme Court Public Information Office, announced on Tuesday, March 15, during a press briefing the high tribunal’s decision to deny the prayer for the issuance of a TRO against the K to 12 Program.
“The Court denied the prayer for the issuance of a temporary restraining order and or writ of preliminary injunction,” Atty. Te said.
The SC’s decision to junk the petitions came ahead of the full implementation of the educational program that adds two more years to high school this coming June.
Department of Education Secretary Armin Luistro expressed his gratitude to the SC for its decision not to grant a TRO against the K to 12 Program. He said: “This announcement allows the Department of Education and our stakeholders to focus on the urgent remaining tasks for the opening of Grade 11 by June this year.”
Luistro then urged the petitioners “to work with us even more closely so we can address any remaining challenges.”
Kabataan Partylist Representative Terry Ridon expressed dismay over the high court’s decision, saying, the added two years to basic education is tantamount to two more years of torture.
Senator Antonio Trillanes, one of the petitioners against K to 12, said the government should first address the real problems that plague the education sector such as the lack of classrooms and the low salaries of teachers before implementing the controversial education program.
Rappler’s Jee Geronimo said another group of petitioners, the Suspend K to 12 Alliance, believe that the only recourse left against the program is people power. The group called on the people to carry on the fight against K to 12.
