A new book detailing the atrocities and corruption under the time of former President Ferdinand Marcos has been launched by an America-based Filipino author.
Myles Garcia, who now lives in San Francisco, wrote the book entitled “Thirty Years Later… Catching Up with the Marcos-Era Crimes”. The launch of the book comes at the time of the vice presidential bid of Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.; the son and namesake of the late dictator.
Garcia said in an ABS-CBN feature that the book intends to educate young voters, comprising almost 40% of the electorate, who does not have a concrete grasp of what transpired during the military rule in the 1970s.
“More than half the electorate are young people,” said Garcia. “They’ve been fed all these lies, I’ll call them lies and propaganda and that’s worrying, so hopefully I’m doing my part with my book in convincing people and saying ‘Hey, wake up!’,” he was quoted as saying in the feature story.
The new book lists in bullet form and short paragraph the horrifying stories of corruption and violence during the reign of the late President Marcos.
According to an Inquirer story, the book opens with how Mr. and Mrs. Marcos rose into power and how other families became their cronies.
Garcia said that he has been getting strong opinions against the book he wrote.
“I’ve exchanged barbed words with them and they keep saying ‘No, these are all lies and you keep recycling the lies of the yellows,’” he said.
But he defended that all of his accounts were based on reports that were published in major newspapers such as The Inquirer and other foreign news sources New York Times, LA Times, and the Washington Post.
