Miesha Tate is the new UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion after she defeated Holly Holm in the co-main event ofUFC 196: McGregor vs. Diaz on Saturday, March 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
According to an article published by Bleacher Report, Tate submitted Holm with a rear-naked choke at 3:30 of the fifth and final round.
She told UFC announcer Joe Rogan after she won: “I knew I had to finish the fight, find the perfect time. I had to be perfect in the fifth round. She edged me in a few of the previous rounds. I knew the fifth was important.”
As for Holm, she admitted she let her guard down.
In a quote released to the media by the UFC public relations team, the former boxing world champion said: “It wasn’t the right move to shake her off my back; it was stupid and I should have fought it off more. When you are up against a wrestler like that, of course, that threat is there for a takedown and you have to recognize it.”
Holm said in an interview days before the match that she wanted to make the most out of her first title defense.
MMA Junkie quoted her as saying: “At this point, I’m not looking past March 5. That’s as far as my mind will let me go, that’s as far as my heart and my passion will let me to go.
“You’re never promised another fight. I want to make sure I make the most of this fight and not look past it.”
UFC President Dana White announced that Tate’s first bantamweight defense will come against Rousey.
ESPN quoted him as saying: “I think that Ronda now will fight Miesha Tate for the title. That’s what’s going to happen.” That’s what I said before this fight even happened. Whoever wins tonight will fight Ronda for the title.”
White said in a previous interview that Rousey, who was defeated by Holm last year, will fight this year.
