- Vice presidential candidate hopes to secure endorsement of One Cebu party
- He says talks are already in place between him and the Garcia family
- He’s optimistic about getting the endorsement, says he and the Garcias are long-time friends
MANILA, Philippines – With the Garcia-led One Cebu party severing its ties with Vice President Jejomar Binay and the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), vice presidential candidate Sen. Bongbong Marcos announced he is seeking the former’s endorsement.
According to Marcos, talks have been in place for some time although they have yet to reach an agreement.
“Matagal na kami nag-uusap. Lumalapit ako sa kanila para humingi ng suporta,” ABS-CBN quoted him as saying. “Pero sa ngayon marami pa silang isyung tinatalakay.”
[We have been talking for some time. I went to them and asked for their support. But for now they are still discussing many issues.]
Despite no concrete deal in place, Marcos said he is confident of getting the backing of the Garcias whom he described as friends of his family since the time of his father.
“They haven’t announced who they are supporting, but since they are already supportive of me, I hope they can back my campaign,” he said. “One Cebu’s support is a very big help because they carry very significant numbers.”
Cebu, home to 2.7 million voters which is the most in any province, has proven to be a crucial lynchpin in past elections.
As shown by the latest Pulse Asia survey, Marcos lagged behind rival Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo in the Visayas region; garnering only 18 percent as against her 34 percent. His closest rival, Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero, also got the same score as him.
In Central Visayas where the island province is located, Marcos fared even more poorly with only a 10 percent score.
