- A You Tube user shared a video to warn people not to ride outside a vehicle as it could be dangerous
- Missionary Darrell Cheeks deemed it important to share to people the perils of the practice
- Riding on top and at the back part of a vehicle is common in many areas in the country
You Tube user Philippines – Darrell Cheeks uploaded a video taken from the dash camera of his vehicle.
According to his caption on the clip, a man had fallen off the back of vehicle which is actually a Philippine jeepney. He says: “I often see people riding on the top or hanging off the back of Jeepneys. This is the first time in 5 years I have seen someone actually fall off one.”
Apparently, Mr. Cheeks was driving from Puerto Galera going to Calapan on the island of Mindoro last week when he witnessed the unfortunate incident. His dashcam captured the whole thing as it happened; as he was driving directly behind the jeepney.
Through this post, he hopes to warn everyone to avoid such a risky practice as it could endanger lives – both the ones on the crowded vehicle and the people driving behind the transport unit.
It was obvious that the guy who fell had broken an ankle and probably had a lot of road burns from the tragic fall.
It was just fortunate that the uploader was not tailgating too close, and also that there was no oncoming traffic; such that he was able to swiftly move over to miss running over the fallen guy. He admitted being quite shocked at the time though.
But what if a bus or a truck had been closely tailgating that jeepney along the highway? Or if there was an oncoming traffic on the other lane? Such a scary thought.
Sadly, we see many similar scenarios on the road especially in the provinces.
A commenter on the video clip said: “That sure is no surprise the way they all hang on public transport ! I remember seeing 7 up on a trike !!”
Another one expressed relief and compassion: “Poor guy, glad he wasn’t hurt worse, sure could have been much more. God may have had you right there trailing behind not too close to save his life. [You]Never know… Thanks for sharing Darrell…”
Others said the guy probably got too tired of hanging on or that he felt sleepy during the travel.
Many were pleased that the guy was spared from a more serious predicament. Other than hurting the next few days just from the road burns and a broken ankle, Mr. Cheeks said he’s just so glad the guy is ok.
But he sure wasted no time in sharing this clip; hoping people will be reminded to be more mindful of the possible risks in this kind of practice.
This is the footage of the near escape from a worse scenario:
