MANILA- A 19-year-old man showed no remorse after setting a 12-year-old boy on fire.
Wilfren Azaña together with two more apprentices, aged 12 and 13, were arrested by the police on Monday. According to an article written by Perseus Echeminada of Philippine Star, the suspect stopped the victim as he was walking along Dr. A Santos Avenue, Paranaque City at around 1:45 am, Monday.
“They tied up the victim and stuffed a sock in his mouth before covering him with dried leaves and cartons and setting him on fire,” said Senior Superintendent Ariel Andrade, Paranaque’s city police chief.
Azaña, in an interview with ABS-CBN, admitted the crime. He related that he had been waiting on the victim to get a dose of revenge after the boy’s group mauled him. He admitted that he hit the victim’s head with a stone, tied him up then burned him using cartons and dried leaves, adding that he plans to avenge four more members of the group.
The victim, on the other hand, sustained third degree burns and is in a critical condition. He is currently confined at the Intensive Care Unit of the Philippine General Hospital.
Azaña is detained at the police station and will be charged with arson with frustrated murder while the two minors are under the care of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
His mother, Ma. Erlinda, was shocked by her son’s statements and said it is better that he be detained.
“It’s better (he be imprisoned) because we don’t know what might happen. At least, we get to visit him here,” she stated.
