- A CCTV footage of the incident has been released by the authorities
- The woman was identified as Mary Grace Trinidad
A Filipina identified as Mary Grace Trinidad was believed to have given birth at the toilet inside the Subway sandwich restaurant in West Covina, California on Monday morning, February 15.
She was arrested by the police after they tracked her down in an alleyway behind a nearby Pep Boy store by following a trail of her blood.
In the CCTV footage released by the police, Trinidad, 38, was seen making her way to the restroom of the restaurant and she left ten minutes later.
According to an article published by KTLA 5, one of the customers noticed that the Filipina was bloody when she left, so she called one of the employees. They found an umbilical cord leading into the toilet.
West Covina Police Department Cpl. Rudy Lopez told the members of the media that the newborn, a full term baby boy, was found crying, upright and half-submerged in the toilet water.
Lopez continued that the newborn’s placenta was found in the trash can.
The employees called 911, and the newborn was rushed to the Queen of the Valley Hospital and admitted in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
As a precaution, Trinidad was also brought to the Queen of the Valley Hospital.
Filipinos in the area claim that the woman is a familiar face to them; disclosing that Trinidad has been sleeping, using the restrooms in the restaurants and begging in the area.
ABS-CBN News quoted a certain Lydia Olaivar as saying: “Only yesterday she was there in front of the restaurant, probably in labor na siya [since] yesterday.”
Trinidad faces charges of attempted murder and child abandonment. Bail will be set at $ 2 million.
Police records also reveal that she has a criminal history and is currently wanted on a $ 30,000 warrant for drug charges.
