Over P11.6-million worth of Cannabis plants (marijuana) were destroyed by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in the province of La Union in the previous week in their fight against the illegal use of dangerous drugs.
In an article published by Sun Star Manila on February 28, it was disclosed that PDEA Director General Arturo Cacdac Jr. has spearheaded the destruction of at least 49,600 fully-grown marijuana plants, 41,600 marijuana seedlings and 700 grams of dried marijuana stalks in 16 different sites within the municipality of Santol.
The destroyed cultivation areas, which post a combined land area of 7,182 square meters, are located in Sitio Palpalidan in Barangay Sasaba, and Sitios Bas-ungan, Sagingsing and Saep in Barangay Sapdaan.
In the previous weeks, the PDEA and the PNP have also partnered with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in seizing marijuana plantations in the provinces of Benguet, Kalinga and La Union, wherein the government was able to take hold of P28.2-million worth of Cannabis.
Chief Supt. Ulysses Abellera, regional director of the PNP in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), said that 53,900 fully-grown marijuana plants, 110 kilos of dried marijuana stalks and three kilos of marijuana seeds were destroyed in the CAR, while the Santol Municipal Police Station has reported that 8,800 fully-grown marijuana plants have been destroyed near the boundary of La Union and Ilocos Sur on Sunday.
