- LP’s vice presidential standard bearer Leni Robredo shares her thoughts on the Marcos’ burial issue
- According to her, former President Ferdinand Marcos does not deserve to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani
- Meanwhile, presidential bet Grace Poe clarifies stand on the issue
The late strongman of Ilocos and the 10th President of the Republic of the Philippines, Ferdinand Edralin Marcos Sr., died 26 years ago.
However, his remains still lie in the refrigerated crypt in Ilocos Norte and his family has been waiting for a decision whether he will be given a hero’s burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
In line with this, 2016 top position candidates were asked with regards to their stand on Marcos finally being given a hero’s burial at the Heroes’ Cemetery; a national cemetery within Fort Bonifacio in Western Bicutan, Taguig City.
LP’s vice presidential bet, Leni Robredo, gives her stand; as disclosed in a report written by correspondent Nestor Corrales and published by Inquirer.net.
In an ambush interview while in Bulacan on Saturday, February 27, Robredo bares her thoughts on the matter; saying that she is not in favor of the late president Marcos being buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
Defending her stand she explained, “I think living through its name, that is a place where Filipinos, who were being looked up to, had contributed a lot and had been a model to his countrymen, are being buried.”
She also reiterated that there should not be a special treatment on who will be buried in Philippine Heroes’ Cemetery.
Returning with a question on whether Marcos is deserving enough, she asked, “Ang tanong ngayon, deserving ba iyong dating pangulong Marcos para ilibing doon? Siya ba ang halimbawa ng isang Pilipino na nagbuwis ng buhay, nagsakripisyo nang husto para sa ating bansa? Kasi iyon ang simbolo.” [ The question now is — Is the former president Marcos deserving of being buried there? Was he an example of a Filipino who shed his life, sacrificed a lot for our country? Because that is the symbol.]
She stands firm on her conviction that the former president does not deserve a hero’s burial.
On a similar account, in an article written by correspondent Myla Ager and published by Inquirer.net, presidential bet Grace Poe clarified her stand on the Marcos burial issue, saying: “Marcos’ burial should be in accordance with the law.”
This was because of the issue wherein she allegedly said, that if she wins in the presidential bid, she will allow a state burial for the late president Marcos.
Furthermore, Poe stressed: “The decision should be harmonized with the intentions in Republic Act 10368 on the reparation and recognition of human rights violations during the Marcos regime.”
Apparently, she was misquoted for her words when she said: ‘Dapat talagang malagay na sa maayos ang paglilibing kay President Marcos, kung ano pa man ‘yan.’ [President Marcos’ burial should now be put into place, whatever that is.]
Poe also added that it is not the president’s decision alone whether Marcos should be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani or be given a state burial.
