- An Indian national gets a 4-year jail term and 9 cane strokes after pleading guilty on the charge of causing grievous hurt by dangerous means
- His victim is a 38-year-old Filipina domestic helper who had a relationship with the perpetrator since 2013
- The crime took place after the Indian national becomes fed up from being ignored
An Indian national was sentenced to a jail time of four years and will be hit nine times with a cane after pleading guilty on February 11, 2016 for a crime he committed.
In a report written by Amir Hussain and published by the Straits Times, Palaiyan Murugadass, 41, a construction worker, admitted to a crime which transpired on August 23, 2015; of which he was charged with causing grievous hurt by dangerous means.
Apparently, the victim, identified as Allen Remedios, 38, a Filipino national working in Singapore as a domestic helper, tried to break-up with the perpetrator on July 2015.
However, this made the Indian national go berserk which caused him to commit the crime.
During the court trial, it was revealed that although Remedios tried to break-up with Murugadass, the latter was not willing to let go.
He continuously bothered Remedios with calls ranging to 30 times a day but was ignored several times.
Because of this, Murugadass devised a plan to get back at his former girlfriend. And on August 23, 2015, armed with a pen knife – with 7 cm blade – he waited for Remedios at the void deck of a HDB block in Tampines Street 33; with a plan to injure her.
When Remedios walked along the block at 6:30 pm, Murugadass threatened her, saying: “You playing me, you playing me. You will see, I will kill you”.
But the Filipina did not heed Murugadass’ words and instead continued walking; which did not sit well with the Indian national. He then slashed her throat, and in defense, she tried to fight back resulting to a hand injury.
A bystander who heard the commotion sought the help of the police; thus, Remedios was saved and brought to the hospital.
Remedios’ windpipe was operated on while the cuts on her hand and wrist were stitched.
Medical reports confirmed that Remedios’ injuries resulted to a permanent disfigurement.
Although he should have been jailed for 15 years with fine and caning, the Singaporean court only sentenced him with four years imprisonment and with 9 strokes of cane.
