- Feisty senator wants 50 percent of Cabinet posts manned by youth if she becomes president
- She blasts current set-up, says government shouldn’t be entirely run by “gurang” people
- She believes it is the youth who hold the country’s destiny in their hands
MANILA, Philippines – If she would have her way, she said young people should make up the government.
Finally showing off her trademark feisty form on Valentine’s Day, presidential aspirant Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago promised to give the youth the chance to serve in government and improve the country.
In her speech to college students at the Youth for Miriam launch held in the Ynares Stadium in Pasig City, the solon vowed to give the youth half of the Cabinet posts should she become president.
“If I become president, half of the cabinet will come from the youth,” the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted her as saying. “Ang ating gobyerno pinapatakbo ng mga gurang.” [Our government is being run by the elderly]
Santiago also called on the youth to help transform the country themselves.
“Show them the strength of the truth. In your hands lies the destiny of the Filipinos so we can change the system,” she said. “If you want to change the world, we must change ourselves.”
Known for witticism and her track record in all three branches of government, Santiago is popular with the youth and has consistently topped every survey conducted online and in the campuses of different schools.
She also has one of the greatest number of followers on social media; with millions subscribing to her Facebook and Twitter accounts.
At the same time, however, concerns about Santiago’s health condition have been rife; despite her claiming she has fully recovered from her lung cancer.
