- Pacquiao is still seen using a pair of Nike shoes while doing his routine and training
- The boxing champion also shared training photos on Instagram wearing a custom-made Nike vest
- Pacquiao’s Nike contract was discontinued following his tough stance against same-sex marriage
MANILA, Philippines – Despite the decision of Nike to cut ties with Manny Pacquiao following his controversial statement concerning LGBTs, the Filipino boxing icon continues to wear products manufactured by the Portland-based sports apparel giant during his boxing training.
Nick Giongco mentioned in his article for Manila Bulletin published on February 20 that Pacquiao still uses Nike shoes while doing his routine and training in preparation for his upcoming April 9 faceoff with Timothy Bradley in Las Vegas.
Mike Koncz, Pacquiao’s Canadian adviser, said wearing Nike shoes was not something out of the extraordinary for the world-class boxer.
“He feels comfortable with the shoes,” said Koncz. The Canadian adviser is in General Santos City where Pacquiao is spending the first half of his training.
Aside from the shoes, Congressman Pacquiao is also seen training in Nike clothing, as mentioned by Simeon Gholam in his article for Mail Online published on February 19.
The Filipino fighter posted photos on Instagram showing one of his training routines while wearing a custom-made Nike vest.
Pacquiao’s Nike contract is supposedly valid until next year; however, the clothing endorsement deal was discontinued following the boxing icon’s tough stance against same-sex marriage.
Pacquiao is receiving flak after his controversial “worse than animals” comment on homosexual relations. The boxing icon later apologized for his statement and clarified that he is not condemning the LGBT community, but only “telling the truth of what the Bible says.”
“We find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent,” said a Nike spokesperson.
“Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community. We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao”; the spokesperson has made known their corporate decision.
