- VP Jejomar Binay promised to build a “Malacañang in Mindanao” if elected President
- He said this is part of efforts to extend decentralization and devolution
- He says he also plans to similarly establish satellite offices in Cebu
If former President Ferdinand Marcos built the “Malacañang of the North” in Ilocos Norte and former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo had the “Malacañang sa Sugbo” in the Visayas, Vice President Jejomar Binay promises to establish a “Malacañang in Mindanao” if he wins the elections this coming May.
Binay, who is running for the highest position in the country under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), made the promise as he hit the campaign trail in Lanao del Norte.
The Vice President said building a “Malacañang in Mindanao” and establishing national offices on the island are part of efforts to allow “local governments to experience the true meaning of decentralization and devolution.” He also plans to establish a similar center in Cebu.
“Pinapangako ko po sa inyo, personal ko pong tutugunan ang mga problema po ninyo sa Mindanao. Ang akin pong balak, katulad po ng aking gagawin sa Cebu, maglalagay po ako ng Malacañang in Cebu, maglalagay din po ng Malacañang dito sa Mindanao. [I promise that I will personally address your problems in Mindanao. My plan is, similar to what I will do in Cebu, to build a Malacañang in Cebu, and I also want to put up a Malacañang here in Mindanao],” Binay told the crowd, as quoted by Rappler.
The presidential aspirant also promised to focus specific issues in Mindanao such as electricity, security, terrorism, and agriculture. He also stuck to his campaign message that focuses on criticizing the incumbent Administration’s neglect of Mindanao.
“Itong administrasyon na ito walang inukol na atensyon, walang pinakitang pagmamalasakit dito sa problema ng Mindanao. [This administration did not give attention and did not show concern to the problems of Mindanao],” he said, as quoted by PhilStar.
