Among those who were mesmerized by Paulo Avelino’s acting performance in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival entry, “Ang Larawan,” was “The Voice of the Philippines” coach, Lea Salonga.
The Broadway singer took to Twitter to profess her astonishment over the actor’s performance.
“If you’re a fan of Paulo Avelino, I urge you to watch his stellar performance in ‘Ang Larawan.’ He doesn’t sing as well as the others, but his acting! He will be one of the greatest as he continues to grow! Congrats!” she wrote on December 30, 2017.
It seemed as though the actor’s legion of fans has gained a new member. In another tweet, Lea finally mentioned the actor and told him that he will soon rise as one of the greatest actors of his generation.
“mepauloavelino, Hello, Paulo, allow me please to wish you congratulations on your achievement in ‘Ang Larawan.’ Your work was absolutely riveting to watch. Without a doubt, you will be one of the greatest actors of your generation. From your fan, Lea Salonga.”
Meanwhile, a netizen expressed distaste towards the singer’s tweet. The Twitter user wrote,
“Gee, I know you are an accomplished singer and all but to criticize someone about his inability to sing in a musical is a bit… cruel? Don’t you think?”
Another netizen noticed the tweet and replied,
“I think she meant na “not only sing but act” …nakulangan po ata ng words iyong post niya..hehe..”
The dismayed netizen replied back with an emphasis on Lea’s words,
“He doesn’t sing AS WELL as the others..”
Another concerned netizen rose into the Twitter scene and reverted,
“She meant it that he doesn’t (at least by her standards) but she didn’t say he was bad. So I guess to be acceptable in her eyes (or ears for that matter) is remarkable, isn’t it? Perspective.”
Finally, the singer noticed this exchange of different views that concern her tweet. She finally spoke up and wrote,
“Hayaan na. As long as the person I intended to compliment receives the praise, that’s all I require.”
In a separate tweet, Lea Salonga further explained what her tweet really meant. She said,
“I mean, his acting skills are beyond what I would ever expect from an actor his age. He’s not a singer, but he is an exceptional actor.”
“Ang Larawan” made a sweep during the Metro Manila Film Festival Gabi ng Parangal held at KIA Theater on December 27, 2017, snagging the Best Picture, the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award, Special Jury Prize for Nick Joaquin, the author of the play “Portrait of the Artist as Filipino” on which the musical version of “Ang Larawan” was based, Best Actress in a Leading Role for Joanna Ampil, Best Musical Score, and Best Production Design awards.
