Being a teacher is considered one of the most difficult jobs because of the numerous sacrifices every educator encounters in his/her teaching career. Molding young minds is no easy feat, and often a thankless one. For this teacher from Sorsogon, she even has to drive 40 kms a day just to get to her destination: a far-flung public school in a rural area.
Meet Teacher Maricris Llaguno, a 23-year-old educator at San Jose Elementary School who wakes up at 5 in the morning to prepare for her early ride to school.
Every day, without fail, Teacher Maricris dons a helmet and jacket, and rides her scooter to travel 20 kms to her destination. And after the day is done, she returns home, traversing the same distance.
In an episode of “Reel Time” on GMA News TV, the young maestra shared how she passes through 20 barangays and one light, wooden bridge spanning the water.
According to Teacher Maricris, the wooden bridge is just a recent addition to her route because previously, she had to take a balsa, or a wooden raft, to cross the river.
Once she gets to her school, kids line up to meet Teacher Maricris. As a multi-grade teacher, she handles students from Grades 1 and 2 simultaneously. She even explained that some teachers handle more classes in a day since there’s an obvious lack of manpower due to stringent requirements in becoming a teacher.
According to the website Definitely Filipino, Teacher Maricris is almost on her third year of teaching – starting her career immediately after she graduated from Bicol University in 2014.
The passionate young teacher recalled one too many challenges and struggles in being an educator.
She came from a family of teachers, so it was inevitable for her to become one. Despite her initial reluctance in continuing her career, Teacher Maricris realized that she could help more students by inspiring and educating them.
These days, Teacher Maricris proudly shares one of her biggest accomplishments. “Nung una, mahina talaga sila magbasa at maraming non-reader.
Teacher Maricris underscored the need for more teachers to aid in the country’s growth and development:
