While Sara Heller was carrying her weeks-old baby, the mother was in complete distress after finding a horrible discovery from her doctors. Knowing that her baby would be born with a rare congenital medical condition, Sara soon faced the dire consequences with her partner, Chris Eidam. But where would the couple draw strength if even their own doctors advised them to give up all hope and abort?
Sara was just 24 weeks into her pregnancy with her first child when she received the distressing news from her doctors. Much to her disappointment, the first-time mother is carrying a child that has an extensively cleft lip and palate. This was discovered during the ultrasound scan.
This rare medical condition only affects nine living people in the world. In Sara’s son’s case, the gap went all the way from the lip to the nose. The doctors insinuated that if he ever lives, the baby would have difficulty leading a normal life.
Because of this, the doctors advised the couple to abort the baby. Some people would give in to this pressure, but the couple remained steadfast towards their goal: to provide their child with a normal life. Sara expressed their yearning to change people’s view of people with cleft lips and palates:
“It is OK to be proud of your baby no matter the circumstances. We wanted to change what ultrasound/newborn/first year pictures on our Facebook/Instagram accounts looked like. We wanted to spread awareness of cleft lips and palates.”
Instead of opting to abort their baby, the couple decided to go on with the pregnancy. In the end, Sara gave birth to a healthy baby boy who they christened as “Brody.” As expected, the toddler was born with a severe cleft, but the gap on his lip and palate was filled with his parents overflowing love.
Sara and Chris had to endure several remarks from other people about Brody’s appearance but instead of being offended, the couple used this as their motivation to further pursue their cause for baby Brody. Sara was quoted as saying:
“I decided to educate rather than create a confrontation because that is what I want Brody to do in the future, I will want him to educate, to be an advocate for younger cleft kids who don’t have their own voice yet.”
Due to other people’s overflowing support for Brody, he was able to undergo a surgery that fixed the gap on his nose. With his condition today, doctors concluded that Brody will be able to speak and eat normally in the future. Check out some of his latest photos below!
