Graduating college with crippling student debt is a normal occurrence all over the United States, and many have accepted it as an inevitable reality, with things such as expensive matriculation, college student housing, books, and other school fees all in consideration.
A Design major from the University of Austin, however, refused to accept having a massive student loan as part of his reality. He is expected to graduate in two years without having to avail of any student loans because of his ingenious plan of building his own in-campus housing. The incoming Junior student is heading back to Uni this fall with his brand new home.
25-year-old Joel Weber used the concepts he learned from his major to build himself a 145-square-foot house he can live in while he finishes school.
Fortunately, a carpenter and a volunteer electrician helped Joel built his temporary college student housing.
It may have cost Joel $ 20,000 (nearly PHP 1 million) to build the tiny apartment Joel is bringing to uni, but the benefits are bigger, and Weber has already calculated it — he is saving a total of $ 19,200 by bringing his own home rather than renting one inside the campus.
Joel’s new college student housing may be tiny when viewed from the outside, but the inside looks really cozy and is complete with every facility a college student might need to survive uni: electricity, a stove, working plumbing, a pretty cool shower, and two lofts.
Joel was thankful for all the help he got building his new “dorm.”
“I saved up quite a bit and what I didn’t have, family, friends, and the community around me donated materials.”
Weber said he has always been fascinated with living small and simple:
“I loved tree houses when I was younger, and I don’t think that dream has ever died.
I may live [in this tiny home] forever and I’m cool with that, 145 square feet might not be for everybody, and that’s OK…
It’s more about how I can live simple and still be grateful.”
What do you think of Joel Weber’s ingenious plan to escape student debt? Do you think you can also live in a college house like his? What is your own experience with student housing and student debt? Share your thoughts and stories in the comments section below!
