A couple was devastated after they lost their child, 15 days after he was born.
Jillian and Jaron Johnson were both ecstatic when they were blessed with their first child, Landon. Since he was born only weighing 3.3 kilograms, he had to undergo heavy medication. Jillian was then advised to breastfeed him.
“Unless you’d had a breast augmentation or cancer or some serious medical reason as to why you couldn’t breastfeed, your baby would not be given formula unless a prescription was written by the pediatrician,” shared Jillian.
But every time Jillian breastfeeds her baby, she notices how Landon would just suck from her breast for hours and still cry for some reason.
“When I asked them (nurses) why he was always on my breast, I was told it was because he was ‘cluster feeding’.
“I recalled learning all about that in the classes I had taken, and being a first-time mom, I trusted my doctors and nurses to help me through this – even more so since I was pretty heavily medicated from my emergency c-section and this was my first baby.
“But I was wrong. I’ve learned I have to be my child’s number one advocate,” she shared.
After the third day, something horrible happened. They were discharged and was finally allowed to go home. Instead of gaining weight, Landon lost 9.7% of his body weight. Still, Jillian had no instructions to buy any formula for her baby.
After 12 hours, Landon went into a cardiac arrest because of starvation and dehydration! Apparently, they discovered that Jillian wasn't producing enough milk for Landon! They rushed him to the hospital and was on life support for 15 days before dying. He suffered from “wide-spread brain injury” brought about by the cardiac arrest.
“The best advice I was given by one of his NICU doctors while he was on life support is sure breast is best, but follow with the bottle.
“This way you know your baby has eaten enough…. if only I could go back in time.”
“We hope that by spreading the knowledge we’ve learned that we can help prevent any other family from losing their child to something that is 100 percent preventable.”Jillian shared in between tears.
