Fast food giant Jollibee just ripped people’s hearts out and simultaneously stitched it back together when they released two new commercials on February 9, titled ‘Vow‘ and ‘Crush.’
The two videos were part of the ‘Kwentong Jollibee Valentine Series’ and it immediately sent the internet buzzing after netizens watched it. After all, it contained what most Filipinos are fond of – romance. And yes, ‘hugot.’
However, controversy might soon arise after the Jollibee video ‘Vow‘ was discovered to be a rip-off of a McDonald’s ad released back in 2009.
McDonald’s released a commercial called ‘First Love’, and just like ‘Vow’, it featured two sweethearts whose love story began in a fast food chain. The ending immediately caught netizens’ attentions as the two ads even had similar lines.
McDonald’s ‘First Love’ ended with a statement, “Kahit hindi rin naging kami sa huli, siya pa rin ang first love ko.” Meanwhile, Jollibee’s ‘Vow’ ended with “Para sa patuloy na nagmahal nang walang hinintay na kapalit.”
According to netizens, the resemblance was uncanny. ‘Vow’ was probably directly inspired by ‘First Love.’

Veteran Digital Marketing Executive and PLDT Vice President of Digital Marketing Strategy Carlo Ople noted that nowadays, it’s not about being first. Instead, it’s all about audience impact and how much emotion the commercial evoked from people.
He said, “In this age of digital, what matters is the here and now. With the example of the Jollibee story that came out recently, if it resonates with customers now, then it’s successful.”
“It’s not just about uniqueness anymore, connecting and capturing your audience at the right time is just as important,” Ople continued. He also said that it’s all about the “authenticity” and how much the audience – or the customer – believes in the brand and what it stands for.
It is notable that Max’s Restaurant and Smart Communications also have ads that are based on the ‘hugot’ concept, or the topic of unrequited love. Ople stated, “It’s also not about doing it first. It’s about doing it again and again. It’s about consistency and relevance.”
