Despite what most people believe, Maxine did not enjoy the home field advantage. In fact, it actually had an adverse effect on her.
This statement was made by Jonas Gaffud, Maxine's official pageant trainer for the 65th Miss Universe competition, during an interview at the post-pageant gala.
Gaffud, the man behind other famous beauty queens like Janine Tugonon, Shamcey Supsup, and Venus Raj, said that the Filipino people's huge expectations of Maxine were too heavy for her to bear. He added that it was especially difficult for her to perform here, where she could hear and feel the hometown crowd's reactions.
"Ang sabi ni Maxine sa akin after, kung hindi lang sa Pilipinas siguro mas kaya niyang lumaban. Nahirapan talaga siya sa pressure." Gaffud said.
When asked why Maxine felt that way, Gaffud pointed at the pressure of having Pinoys putting such high hopes on her.
"Alam mo naman iba ang pressure ng mga Pinoy, 'di ba? So kailangan perfect ka lagi. nahirapan talaga si Maxine."
Netizens all over the Philippines took to social media after being unsatisfied with her response in the question-and-answer portion of the contest. Some even went so far as to bash her for not letting the interpreter translate her answer to English.
Are Pinoys really that hard on their own heroes? Do you buy Gaffud's excuses? Give us your opinions in the comments section!
