Thinking of saving money as your next New Year's resolution? Take inspiration from this one netizen who finished the popular 52-week 'kuripot' challenge.
How much did she manage to save? She saved around Php 71, 500 – Php 3,000 more than what other netizens were able to save. The original challenge was created by Rhea Mocorro.
Early in January of 2016, the 52-week money saving challenge went viral. The purpose of the challenge was to help netizens save money by cutting out the little expenses we usually indulge in.
The ‘kuripot’ challenge had netizens around the Philippines saving every little cent they could set aside from their salaries.
In a Facebook post on VM Bocs' personal page, she shares her method. She admits that the early stages of the method were easy but became increasingly harder as she had to save larger amounts of money later on.
She began by saving P50 on the very first week of January in a plastic piggy bank. Then she added a P50 increment every week until the 52nd week of the year.
The formula is as follows:
Week 1 - P50
Week 2 - P100
Week 3 - P150
Week 4 - P200
Week 5 - P250
...etc. Until you make it to Week of 52 of the year.
"Madali sya sa umpisa pero sa 2nd half na ng taon medjo mabigat bigat na kaya super kuripot ka na nun" she said in a Facebook post on December 28.
She even shared some tips for other netizens willing to take up this challenge.
In a story by WhenInManila.com, JB Dionisio claimed to have finished this challenge as well – saving Php 69,000. He used a bamboo 'alkansya'.
