The new ambitious international airport plan of San Miguel Corp. is going to be built in Bulacan.
Department of Transportation’s undersecretary Roberto Lim, disclosed some of the details from the various unsolicited proposals of the group. The project aims to provide an alternative to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) which has become overloaded over the years.
Lim claims that part of SMC’ s proposal is an “aerotropolis” that has at least 2,000 hectares. The airport will at least have four runways. Ramon Ang, President of SMC said earlier that the new airport would cost $ 10 billion.
Since the project is under unsolicited deals, it has to go through public bidding. However, a few approvals still need to be done by the government including the final go signal from the National Economic and Development Authority headed by President Duterte.
However, Lim said that they will move fast in making the final decision.
“Given the milieu that we are in, we have to catch up,” Lim said as he refers to the need to upgrade the infrastructure in the country.
The finals decision will be made before 2016 ends, Lim said with regards to the project of SMC. Expressways are also included in the proposal.
Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said that they welcome all unsolicited projects. However, they should meet certain conditions.
He claimed that the government will not give subsidies or sovereign guarantees. He said that the government should be not forced to provide support for the private airlines in relocating to the new airport.
