President Rodrigo Duterte may be overseas in China securing primetime deals and multi-billion dollar agreements, but he never strays from the needs of the Filipino people.
His vow to eradicate crime and corruption took another step towards a fairer justice system, when he decided to reopen the investigation regarding the bloody Mamasapano massacre where Moro Islamic Liberation Front guerrillas shot 60 people dead, including 44 members of the elite PNP-Special Action Force.
The President told the media about his plans during his speech at the Philippine-China Trade and Investment Forum in the Great Hall of the People.
“Forty-four Mamasapano soldiers, they went inside, they died. No dramatics, no nothing. No … except that we grieve for our soldiers. Maybe in this – in the days ahead, I will order the opening of that issue again. Not really to prosecute people but just to know what happened. Who got the five million?” Duterte said, referring to the $ 5 million offered by the United States as bounty for the head of Zulkifli Bin Hir, also known as Marwan, who was killed by the SAF commandos.
Duterte suggested that some of the information released regarding Marwan’s death were lies.
“These are the lies that are imposed upon the people which is not good. Let us go for the truth. Let it out. Never mind about corruption. Too late in the day,” the President said.
The Office of the Ombudsman earlier found former Philippine National Police Chief Alan Purisima and former Special Action Force (SAF) head Getulio Napeñas criminally liable for the Mamasapano incident.
