On the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit on September 6 (Tuesday) held in Vientiane, Laos, Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed his excitement upon meeting the "famous" Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.
During the summit, the two met on the sidelines where Abe told Duterte in jest, "I am very excited to see you in person"
"President Duterte, I would like to congratulate you on assuming the Office of the President of the Republic of the Philippines," said Abe with the help of a translator.
Furthermore, in a room filled with diplomats and officials of the government, along with Duterte's cabinet, Abe told Duterte, "Mr President is quite a famous figure also in Japan, and I am very excited to see you in person," drawing laughter from the crowd.
In addition, the Prime Minister also extended his sympathy and concern over the recent Davao bombing that left 14 dead while 60 others wounded.
"First of all, I would like to underscore that Japan firmly deplores the terror incident which took place in Davao the other day. I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt condolences for the victims and their family members and also I’d also like to reiterate my feelings of sympathy for you," he added.
