Touting President Rodrigo Duterte’s ongoing war against drugs, PNP chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa announced that the crime rate has been slashed by 49 percent compared to last year.
According to Dela Rosa, the decrease in crime rate is proof that most of the crimes committed are drug-related.
“This only goes to show that most of these crimes that are happening in our communities are drug-related. That’s why when we focused our resources and attention on the drug problem, crimes also dropped,” the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted him as saying.
Dela Rosa added that they will intensify their campaign against illegal drugs even as he reiterated the PNP’s respect for the law and human rights.
“This campaign is just starting,” he said. “Let us continue with our campaign as long as what we are doing is in compliance with the law and respect of human rights.”
After the drug lords, Dela Rosa said the government would go after the gambling lords next.
“Their days are numbered,” he said.
According to PNP-10 spokesperson Supt. Surki Serenas, their region’s number of crimes as of July 2016 is now only 1,974 compared to 3,983 in the same period last year.
She said many of the crimes such as theft, robbery, domestic violence and rap were related to drugs.
“Our assessment points to the link and direct effect of the diminished presence of illegal drugs in the streets as a result of the intensified anti-illegal drug campaign,” she said.
