The world was shocked after a haunting photo of Syrian boy, sitting dazed and bloodied, emerged online.
The boy was identified as Omran Daqneesh.
According to an article published by CNN, Omran was living with his mother, father, brother and sister in the city of Aleppo in Syria.
Their house was among those that were destroyed by an airstrike Wednesday, August 17. Fortunately, Omran and his family were rescued. However, the incident left a traumatic memory in the child’s mind.
As seen on the video posted by the Aleppo Media Center, Omran was carried by a civil defense worker to the ambulance and unlike a child’s usual reaction, he was not crying during the rescue. He just sat there expressionless.
According to an article published by ABC, the nurse who treated him said that Omran didn’t even cry even as he was being treated
The spokesman of the Aleppo Media Center said that the child was in extreme shock.
He didn’t say anything except ask for his parents and when he saw them, that’s when he started crying.
Omran’s story is the story of every defenseless people, including children, in Syria.
On August 7, Pope Francis renewed his call for peace in the ongoing conflict in Syria; saying that it is unacceptable that the defenseless people, including innocent children, are paying the price in the Syrian war, which is now in its sixth year.
Vatican Radio quoted him as saying: “Dear brothers and sisters, sadly, news continues to reach us from Syria, of civilian victims of the war there, in particular from the city of Aleppo. It is unacceptable that so many defenseless persons – among them many small children – must pay the price for conflict – for the closure of the hearts and the want of a will for peace among the powerful.”
Before inviting the crowd to a moment of silent prayer followed by a Hail Mary, Pope Francis said: “Let us draw near to our Syrian brothers and sisters with prayer and solidarity, and let us entrust them to the maternal protection of the Virgin Mary.”
