After Sen. Manny Pacquiao confirmed that he will be fighting World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Jessie Vargas in his comeback fight this November, Top Rank founder and CEO Bob Arum disclosed that if Pacquiao wins, they are eyeing two fights next year. One of these fights could be the rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted the veteran boxing promoter, who is currently in the Philippines, as saying: “If he wins this fight, we have the idea for a couple of big fights next year. And I think that will end his career with two more fights in 2017.”
Crawford is a possibility, and who knows, Mayweather may be a possibility. You know, Mayweather’s making noises about returning and going to a 50th fight.”
Pacquiao fought Mayweather in the so-called “Fight of the Century” with an injured shoulder last year.
Arum emphasized that once the “Pambansang Kamao” faces Mayweather with a fully-healed shoulder, there’s no doubt that he will win.
Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, previously said that although the two boxing icons spend their money differently, they are still big spenders and this would be an important factor if they decide to fight each other again in the future.
Boxing Scene quoted him as saying: “Manny’s a generous person and gives a lot of money away to his countrymen. And buys poor people houses and builds churches and builds school and does good things with it. Mayweather buys things, a lot of cars and a lot of houses for himself it seems like. They’re both spenders. Sometimes those spenders have to fight again.”
