MANILA, Philippines – Focus on the good.
Reacting to criticism over some errors in President Rodrigo Duterte’s latest list of government officials allegedly involved in the illegal drug trade, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa said it’s better for people to focus on the campaign’s good effects instead.
Dela Rosa, who was present during a gathering of both policemen and local officials tagged by Duterte as alleged drug protectors in Camp Crame on Monday, said the anti-drug campaign wouldn’t go very far if they stop to scrutinize every small mistake they make.
“Ewan ko bakit tayo’y masyadong concerned doon sa kung magkakamali tayo. Sana concerned tayo do’n sa magandang idudulot ng malaking kampanya na ito. Kung masyado tayong mag-pa-pa-control doon sa takot na magkakamali tayo doon sa maliit na bagay, doon sa maliit na porsiyento, walang hahakbang itong kampanya namin,” Rappler quoted him as saying during the press conference.
[I don’t understand why you’re so concerned about mistakes. We should be concerned about the good that the drive would bring to our campaign. If we allow ourselves to be controlled by the fear that we’ll make mistakes over little things, by a small percentage, this campaign will not prosper.]
Dela Rosa also dismissed notions that some in the list were placed there as part of a political vendetta.
“The list wasn’t formed from hearsay, with people just telling the President that so and so is a political rival or so and so didn’t support him. The President is not shallow,” he said.
