ILOCOS SUR, Philippines – A university in Vigan is making news at present because of increased foreign students enrolling in the past few years.
University of Northern Philippines (UNP) in Vigan city is attracting foreign students especially their pre-medicine courses and medicine program. Among the students from different nationalities include Indonesians, Thais, Nepalis, Angolans, and Nigerians, but the number of students enrolled from India is staggering.
At the start of 2016 academic school year, at least 730 Indian nationals are enrolled in the school. Classifications of the Indian students enrolled for the different courses were College of Medicine (405 students), College of Arts and Sciences (110 students) and Community Health Management program of the College of Health Sciences (215 students).
The university disclosed that yearly, over a hundred students are taking pre-medicine courses like Psychology and Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Bryan Realgo mentioned in his article for ABS-CBN News that one of the main reasons for choosing the university among Indians is the good performance of its graduates in the Ministry of India Medical Board Examination.
Back in 2013, a graduate of the University of Northern Philippines topped the board examination. From then on, the university became the top choices for many Indians in completing their graduation courses and programs.
One more reason for choosing the university is the affordable fees structure offered in taking different courses.
“It’s more economical for us, the quality of education is the best and the climate condition is also similar to our place so comparing to other this is the best choice,” said Indian student Bharat Ajay Kumar.
“The way our lessons are being taught is easy and understandable and the faculty is accommodating and very supportive,” another student named Mahesh Dhandapan said.
Dr. Gilbert Arce, the president of the university, said that they are strictly implementing their retention policy and screening process for students so the quality of education will not be compromised.
“I have been telling my colleagues in the university handling the foreign students, if a student fails or did not meet the general weighted average, they should be automatically out of the program,” Arce added.
Back in 2015, due to the increasing numbers of foreigners in Vigan, local officials in Vigan asked the foreign students to register in their local government unit.
GMA News mentioned in an article on April 2015 that registering in the local government aims to protect the students and to let them go around Vigan without having to carry their passports.
“Sa halip na dala nila palagi ang kanilang passport at baka mawala, ‘yun na lamang ID kung sakaling (narito) sila (sa) Vigan,” said councilor George Villanueva.
[“Instead of them always carrying their passport, with increased chance of losing it, they can carry their ID when they are in Vigan.”]
