- Pinoy team ousted favored European rivals in biggest Dota 2 tournament
- They moved to the Top 8, are now guaranteed $ 500,000
- First place winner in the $ 20M tournament to receive more than $ 8M
MANILA, Philippines – And they say playing Dota 2 in college was a waste of time.
For TNC Pro Team, however, their mastery of the game has them reaping dividends in six figures, and then some.
Chalking up their biggest victory to date, the all-Filipino TNC Pro Team swept heavy tournament favorites Team OG 2-0 in The International tournament in Seattle to move up to the Final 8.
“Day 2 of The International 2016 may have been the most memorable day so far not just for Filipinos but for the rest of Southeast Asia as well,” read the team’s statement on its page.
In doing so, TNC guaranteed themselves a hefty $ 500,000 payday. OG — touted as arguably the best team in Dota 2 out there — left with a guaranteed $ 300,000 in winnings.
What made TNC — composed of team capation Jimmy “DeMon” Ho, Marc “Raven” Fausto, Carlo “Kuku” Palad, Sam “Sam_H” Hidalgo, Nico “Eyyou” Barcelon — and their victory all the more sweeter was that they beat the team who earlier defeated them in the Frankfurt and Manila Majors.
Before beating OG, TNC was able to oust Chinese team VG.R to stave off elimination.
TNC is hoping their come-from-behind will spur them to become the winners of this year’s tournament.
“TNC made history being the first Filipino team to enter the top 8 of The International 2016. Not to mention the biggest upset in the history of Dota 2. Beating the number 1 team and back to back Major Champions OG with a 2-0 finish. TNC had certainly made their statement in the international Dota 2 community. Let’s hope that their momentum will carry them onto being the champions of this year’s The International,” they said.
The champions of the tournament which has a prize pool of $ 20 million will take home more than $ 8 million.
