Tough-talking President Rodrigo Duterte is upset with the sudden rise of extra-judicial killings caused by the government’s decisive move to wipe out illegal drugs.
Presidential Spokersperson Ernesto Abella relayed on Tuesday that President Duterte shares the sentiments and concern of several groups and individuals who are bothered and worried by the upsurge of illegal-drugs related killings.
“I don’t think he’s happy about it (killings). I don’t think happiness is the right word to use,” Abella said during a media briefing in Malacañang.
Pres. Duterte has acknowledged the fact that the murders raised public awareness about the depth and breadth of drug menace in the country, the Palace spokesperson said.
“I think he’s very concerned and, in fact, bothered and troubled. He’s deeply and profoundly concerned,” Abella added.
As of latest update of the Inquirer’s ‘Kill List’, about 564 individuals were killed in police operations and vigilante attacks since the President assumed his office.
Shocking photographs released in local and worldwide media show suspected drug dealers frequently hand and foot, shirts soaked in blood, their faces sometimes in duct tape, wearing crude signs.
Part of Duterte’s charm to the electorate is definitely his toughness, and willingness to deal with crime — although this tactic goes alongside what critics observe seeing that it is a complete disregard of due process.
