MANILA, Philippines – Three mayors voluntarily turned themselves over to Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa even as President Rodrigo Duterte promised to reveal the names of local officials involved in the illegal drug trade.
Surrendering to Dela Rosa on Friday afternoon in Camp Crame were Mamaulan Abinal Mulok, Mohammad Ali Abu Abinal, and Rasul Sangki.
Mulok is the current mayor of Maguing while Abinal is a former mayor of Marantao. Both towns are located in Lanao Del Sur. Sangki meanwhile is the incumbent mayor of Ampatuan town in Maguindanao. He immediately turned himself over to the PNP’s Criminal and Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).
Both Mulok and Abinal admitted that they had been involved in the illegal drug trade from 2000 to 2002. Operating in Quiapo, Cavite and Caloocan, the two said they got their supply from Johaira Macabuat, a former mayor in their province.
Macabuat and her partner were recently arrested after operatives raided their compound in Cagayan de Oro.
Promising to mend their ways, Mulok and Abinal said they are willing to help Duterte convince other drug dealers to surrender.
“Willing ako pumunta dito. Suportahan ko yung program ni President Rodrigo Duterte and PNP General Bato,” Abinal told GMA News.
[I came here willingly. I will support the program of President Duterte and PNP chief General Bato.]
For his part, Dela Rosa said he expects more local officials to surrender in the coming days.
“We expect more to come,” he said, adding that at one mayor has already sent surrender feelers to him.
